Breaking Down Each Unit in UARK Finite Math

One of the most important things for students and parents to understand about Finite Math at the University of Arkansas is that Finite isn't really one type of math.


I often describe MATH 20503 as almost like taking four different math classes in one semester.

Students move through four very different units:

  • Unit 1 — Matrices and Optimization

  • Unit 2 — Probability

  • Unit 3 — Finance

  • Unit 4 — Statistics


Just as students begin getting comfortable with one type of math, the course changes and introduces something completely different.


That can make Finite challenging, but there's also a positive side to it: struggling in one unit doesn't necessarily mean a student will struggle in the next.


Understanding how the course changes can help students know what to expect—and can help parents put an individual difficult unit or test into perspective.

Let's break down each unit.



Unit 1: Matrices and Optimization


Finite begins with matrices and optimization, including problems involving maximums and minimums.


For many students, these concepts are new. However, Unit 1 also incorporates skills that may feel familiar from previous math classes, particularly algebra and graphing.


Because of that, students sometimes find the beginning of Finite more manageable than they expected.


That can be both good and bad.


Unit 1 can give students a false sense of confidence

A student may be completing their homework successfully and think:


“Finite isn't as bad as everyone said it would be.”


Then Test 1 arrives.


One of the biggest adjustments students have to make in Finite is realizing that knowing how to perform the math isn't always enough. Students have to determine what information matters, what kind of problem they're looking at, and what method they should use before they ever begin calculating an answer.

That's very different from being given an equation and simply being told to solve it. For many students, Test 1 is when they first realize how they need to prepare for a Finite exam.


They may understand the individual concepts but discover that they haven't practiced enough identifying problems and determining which process applies.


That's an important lesson to carry into the rest of the semester.



Unit 2: Probability


After Unit 1, the course changes significantly as students move into probability.


In my experience working with UARK Finite students, probability tends to be the most difficult unit for the greatest number of students.


There are a couple of reasons for this.

  1. Many students haven't had much previous experience with probability.

  2. There are several different types of probability problems students need to learn.


3. Many essentially ask: “What is the probability of...?”

A student may know how to perform several different probability calculations when someone tells them which method to use. But when they're sitting alone during an exam, they don't know which method applies to the question in front of them.


That's why simply memorizing formulas or processes isn't enough.


Students need to learn to recognize the clues within a question that tell them:
  • What am I being asked to find?

  • What information has been given to me?

  • What type of probability problem is this?

  • Which method applies—and why?


Probability is a great example of why our approach to Finite focuses on helping students understand what to do, where to do it, when to do it, and why.



The End of Unit 2 Can Be a Difficult Point in the Semester


This is also an important point for parents to understand.


A student may have been surprised by their first Finite exam and received a lower Test 1 grade than expected.


Then they immediately move into probability, which is often the most challenging unit for students.


If Test 2 doesn't go well either, it's easy for a student to become discouraged and think:

“Maybe I'm just bad at Finite.”


But that's when understanding the structure of the course becomes especially valuable. Finite is about to change again.

The student is not going to spend the rest of the semester doing increasingly difficult probability problems. They're moving into an entirely different type of math.


A difficult Unit 1 or Unit 2 does not automatically predict how a student will perform in Units 3 and 4.



Unit 3: Finance


After probability, students move into finance.


For many students, this is a welcome change as Unit 3 is also where some students begin seeing a more obvious connection between Finite and their business education.


The types of questions change significantly, and many students find Unit 3 more manageable than Unit 2.


This is one reason I encourage students who struggled during the first half of Finite not to mentally give up on the course.


Unit 3 Can Be an Opportunity

If a student needs to improve their grade, Unit 3 can represent an important opportunity.

I don't want students coming out of a difficult probability unit thinking:


“I just need to survive the next test.”


If finance makes more sense to them, I want them to take advantage of that.


This is the time to aim for a really strong test score, not simply one that's a little better than the previous test to make up points.

It's also a good reminder that struggling in one area of Finite doesn't mean a student is “bad at math.”


Probability and finance require different types of thinking. A student who struggles significantly with one can perform very well in the other.



Unit 4: Statistics


The final unit of Finite focuses on statistics.


This is one area where students can enter the course with very different levels of experience.


Some students took statistics in high school. Others may be encountering many of these concepts for the first time.


Students who have previous statistics experience often recognize some of the material, which can make Unit 4 feel much more familiar than the earlier units.


But even students without a statistics background usually find this unit more manageable material overall

The types of questions can be easier to distinguish from one another, and students may find that some problems involve fewer steps than what they encountered earlier in the semester.



The Retake Exam


Students also have an opportunity later in the semester to retake one of their previous Finite exams. While this can be a valuable opportunity, we generally encourage the students we tutor to view the retake as a backup plan rather than the plan.


The biggest reason is timing. The retake occurs around the same time as Test 4, which means students may find themselves preparing for two different Finite exams at once. In our experience, dividing study time between the retake and Test 4 can sometimes result in both exam scores suffering.


Instead, after a difficult Test 1 or Test 2, we encourage students to focus on performing “extra well” on Tests 3 and 4 and hopefully avoid needing the retake altogether.


It's also important to understand that the retake isn't necessarily an easier exam or a risk-free second attempt.


The Retake Exam is just as difficult as a regular Finite exam, and the retake score replaces the original score—even if the new score is lower.

Students should always verify current retake policies, dates, and grading rules in their MATH 20503 syllabus, as course policies can change.



What About the Finite Math Final?


After all four units, students still have the Finite Math final exam, which accounts for 20% of their overall grade. Because of its weight, the final can be an important opportunity for students to finish the semester strong.


Although a cumulative final may sound intimidating, many students find it more manageable than they expect.

The final does not include some of the most difficult question types from Units 1 and 2, although students should still expect the more challenging material from Units 3 and 4.


Students also have an advantage they didn't have earlier in the semester: experience.

By this point, they've spent an entire semester learning how to approach Finite's application-based questions, and they're reviewing material they've already learned rather than seeing it for the first time. For some students, this can even lead to the final being one of their stronger exam scores.


However, students shouldn't let that create a false sense of security. The final is still a Finite exam and should be prepared for just as seriously as any other test—especially with 20% of the course grade at stake.


The goal of knowing the final can be more manageable isn't to study less. It's to reduce some of the anxiety and give students confidence that, with the right preparation, they still have an opportunity to finish Finite strong.
